Lose Weight With This Thyroid Diet

Lose Weight With This Thyroid Diet by Terry Ryan

Okay, I am going to admit right away…that I just found out about this diet  in WOMAN’S WORLD and blessed by the man himself…Dr. Oz. (Oh, Dr. Oz, my mother has a crush on you.) There it was, the magazine at the checkout counter with Dr. Oz’s charming face staring at me with a title in giant font – NEW FROM DR.OZ 60-SECOND THYROID FIX. And under it in a playful and smaller font was… It can make you 35 lbs slimmer.

Now what’s a chubby, hypothyroid woman to do? That’s right, I couldn’t resist and yanked that magazine off the rack and threw it on the checkout belt. $1.99 later it was mine. When I arrived home I sat my derriere on the couch and checked the contents for the only part I wanted to read. There it was, page 20!  What secret 60 second fix was it going to reveal?  (I’ll try anything.)

Totally intrigued, I read through the article as quickly as I could for the 60 SECOND FIX!  There it was, near the bottom of the page. The number 1 thyroid boost is to eat 30 grams of protein to fire up your metabolism.

I am…yep…a breakfast skipper. My morning begins with water and my gel cap of Triosint, my hormone replacement medicine. Then I head to the pickleball courts where I play for around 2 hours which equals approximately 10k steps on the pedometer. After that, I pick my 85 year-old mother up for lunch, and I usually have a green or fruit salad. Mom will eat pasta or a sub. I love fruit and if I have any kind of animal protein, it will be grilled chicken. Dinner is another salad, maybe a baked potato. I avoid gluten, dairy, and white sugar, and I haven’t lost a pound in over a year. I also am a juicer. Lately, a lazy juicer and will buy a fresh veggie/fruit juice at the juice cafe. I’ve burned out 2 juicers (juicers in a couple of years). All this healthy eating has given me my energy back, but losing weight is still a struggle. I’m looking for the secret.

Here is my favorite juice recipe:

1 Raw organic beet
1 Apple
2 Stalks of celery
1 Cucumber
1/4 Piece of fresh ginger

Place all the ingredients through the juicer and store any leftover juice in glass jars with tops and refrigerator to keep fresh. Use on day two. I drink about 8 ounces at a time, 2 times a day. Please use organic produce.

I am going to try this diet from Woman’s Day for 30 Days to see if I can lose a few pounds. Wish me luck. If you want to find out if it worked or not you can sign up for my updates. I will never use your email to try sell you anything. I’ll only send you new EARTH SHATTERING NEWS about thyroid health and Hashimoto’s disease.

Here is the diet.

Start with this breakfast shake:

In a blender put:

  • 1 Tbs of almond butter
  • 1 Tbs of cacao nibs
  • 1 Cup of unsweetened chocolate almond milk (Do they make UNSWEETENED almond milk?)
  • 1 Serving fiber supplement (I’m going to use Heather’s Tummy Fiber that I use already.
  • 1 Serving of chocolate protein powder
  • Pinch of sea salt.

I’m sure if you cannot find chocolate protein powder, you can use vanilla or plain. Do not put any sugar in this drink in fact avoid all sugar while on this diet.

Lunch

Have 3 oz of turkey, 1 oz. of feta cheese, 3 sliced strawberries on a bed of green salad with slice sweet onion. Drizzle fresh lemon juice and a tablespoon of olive oil.

Dinner

Grilled chicken or steak (4 oz.), unlimited steamed broccoli with 2 tsp of olive oil, lemon juice. 1/2 Baked sweet potato.

There are other option meals to have for lunch and dinner. You are allowed one cheat meal per week that does not contain chemicals or high-fructose corn syrup,

Be sure to drink plenty of water. Coffee and tea are fine. (As always, get doctor’s approval before changing your diet.)

This diet is originates from the book, The Hormone Boost

(From Amazon) New York Times bestselling author Dr. Natasha Turner returns with a simple and effective weight-loss plan that harnesses the power of the six hormones linked to strength, energy, and weight loss.

When it comes to metabolism, energy, immunity, memory, mood, and strength, who doesn’t need a boost now and then? The Hormone Boost is the first book to provide an extensive, scientific overview of the six hormones that influence weight loss. Although it is widely accepted that the thyroid hormones control weight loss efforts, Dr. Turner reveals how the impact of five other hormones―testosterone and DHEAs, adiponectin, growth hormone, adrenaline, and glucagon―are equally important when trying to lose weight.

In Dr. Turner’s previous bestselling books, she taught you how to identify and solve hormonal imbalances. In The Hormone Boost, she focuses on optimizing what’s right and includes a revolutionary plan that has been proven effective for everyone, not just those experiencing symptoms of hormone disruption. With more than 60 recipes and a simple Pick-4 guide to creating meals, smoothies, and salads, the book makes getting the right balance of carbs, fat, and protein easy.

The Hormone Boost is chock-full of tips and positive research findings and features daily progress tracking aids and a weekly workout plan that emphasizes strength training. The book also includes advice about supplements for accelerating fat loss, improving sleep, digestion, and skin appearance, as well as building strong muscles and bones. You will find inspiration in the success stories from Dr. Turner’s clinical practice and TV belly-fat makeovers.

Rather than merely targeting weight loss, The Hormone Boost offers total wellness. No more deprivation, irritability, hunger, or fatigue that so often accompany diets. Dr. Turner’s plan will have you energized from the start!

Sounds like it may work. I’ll let you know.

I Tried The Golden Milk Recipe For Insomnia

I tried the Golden Milk recipe for insomnia, by Terry Ryan

Ah yes, the Golden Milk…its name derived from the yellow color from the focus ingredient, turmeric. (Also know as Golden Tea!). I believe I saw the recipe on Facebook sponsored by the Paleo Mom.

Follow me on Twitter.com/mslakegeorge

I looked up several other sites that had the Golden Milk recipe and some were slightly different. I decided to go with Paleo Mom’s because it was the first one I saw and well, looked good so let’s give it a try.

Who is it for?

If you have insomnia, you may want to check this recipe out. I have suffered with insomnia for years…should say HAD suffered. It no longer is a monkey on my back.

Check out my book: How I Kicked Insomnia to The Curb

Occasionally, I will have a short bout of insomnia; but nothing as bad as not being able to sleep for days in a row. But sometimes, I have a difficult time falling asleep or waking up in the wee hours of the morning wide awake. I will admit, in times of stress when I really need a good night sleep, and I am having an insomnia spell, I will take an Ambien, a prescription sleeping pill. But the hopes of finding a NATURAL REMEDY got my interest, so I tried the Golden Milk.

The 7 ingredients are: (You don’t have to run around. Purchase all the ingredients by clicking on the links below through Amazon. They are affiliate links so I do get a couple of pennies when you order this way. Keeps the web site up and running.

I wrote down the list and briskly determined what I had and had not in my pantry and off the to the grocery store I went.

I used Organic Turmeric spice
Organic cinnamon spice
Organic Coconut Oil I found at Trader Joe’s
McCormick whole peppercorns
Organic fresh ginger root that I had purchased at the local organic farm (Jessica’s located in Sarasota)
Stevia…sugar substitute youcan pu rchase in any grocery store now

The procedure…

Take 1/2 cup of water and put in a saucepan on med heat. Add 1/4 cup of turmeric. Cook down until you have a turmeric paste. Spoon into a spare jar you have saved from the last time you used pasta sauce. You can store this in the refrigerator for up to 7 days. This is the hardest part (after you have shopped for all the ingredients).

Health Blog Terry Ryan

I sprinkled more cinnamon on top.

Now take a saucepan, add 2 cups coconut milk (for the purpose of full disclosure, I used organic almond milk which is fine), 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon, 1 tsp of coconut oil, 1 tsp of chopped ginger, 4 to 6 whole peppercorns, and 1 teaspoon of the turmeric paste. Simmer that all together for about 5 mins, then strain into two mugs and add a packet of Stevia for sweetness…but I bet a spoonful of raw honey would be good too!

I shared this concoction with my better half, and we both liked it. The turmeric wasn’t overwhelming and the ginger and cinnamon gave it a nice taste.

ZZZZzzzzzzz   And…I slept like a baby. Deep sleep like back when you were 10 years old and it’s snowing outside and you’re snuggled under a down comforter. Must admit, I had some wild dreams but not sure that was related to the Golden Milk.

The science behind all the ingredients: (All the ingredients must be used for the formula to work. Oh and take before bedtime.)

Turmeric fights inflammation. See my post on turmeric HERE

Ginger offers strong antioxidant capacity and has similarly enjoyed a long history of use in folk medicine where it is traditionally used to ease stomach upset or to ease the symptoms of colds.

Cinnamon is one of the most beneficial spices on earth, giving it antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, anti-microbial, immunity-boosting, cancer and heart disease-protecting abilities.

Peppercorns contain a good amount of minerals like potassium, calcium, zinc, manganese, iron, and magnesium.

Coconut oil help provide your body with the necessary building blocks to manufacture sleep hormones.

Stevia is just for taste. A natural sweetener.

I have read reviews and I think the Millennials were protesting about all the ingredients/steps. Millennials are forever in a hurry and simmering something in a saucepan isn’t their idea of a good time. However, and to my surprise, I found this in the heath food store.  Just a couple teaspoons in water and hocus pocus…Golden Milk. Do I think this will work as well as making it from scratch?  Probably not, but if you hate the idea off mixing up all the ingredients, then give this a try. Click here to purchase.

Cure Cancer With The Hallelujah Diet? by Terry Ryan

Cure Cancer With The Hallelujah Diet? by Terry Ryan

My neighbor claims the Hallelujah Diet saved her uncle who had cancer of the eye, and that’s how I first heard about the mysterious diet. Hmmm, a diet that saved a person from cancer. I had to learn more.

Googling the Hallelujah Diet, I found out there where many sites supporting and selling products related to the diet. It is a plant based diet with a religious association developed by Rev. George Malkmus from Glens Falls, NY. He was diagnosed with colon cancer in 1976 at the age of 42. He decided to go on a raw vegetable diet and drink lots of fresh carrot juice instead of the traditional route of chemotherapy/radiation. And in a year, he was cured of colon cancer.

It is also called God’s Ultimate Diet. Why? Genesis 1:29 I Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.” Therefore, they believe that God’s diet is a vegetarian diet; 80% raw and 20% cooked vegetables.

A few weeks ago in Sarasota, FL, I read an flyer advertising an informational meeting about the Hallelujah Diet. I went and about 30 people were in the room. The hosts, Mr.and Mrs Dave and Sherry Orcutt started the meeting by relating their story of ailing health and weight problems that they were able to cure with the Hallelujah diet. By the enthusiastic participation of the other people in the room, they were obviously already on the diet and had their own remarkable miracle cures.

From what I understood, there are Hallelujah Diet Retreats you can attend for intensive diet guidance. The speakers said they had closed their retreat, and were focusing on giving informational lectures and selling health products on their site, www, edenwellness, com.

In the room, was a long table with products you could purchase along with a juicer extractor and health books. I purchased the book “The China Study” by The Campbells. An excellent health book that I am halfway through. The back cover reads:

By any measure, America’s health is failing. We spend far more per capita, on health care then any other society in the world, and yet two/thirds of Americans are overweight, and more than 15 million have diabetes. We fall prey to heart disease as often as we did 30 years ago. Etc….

Back to the meeting, the hosts said that according to the First Testament, humans lived to the ripe old age of 900!!!  What!? That it wasn’t until humans started clogging their systems with animal meat, that our health started to drastically decline and our age expectancy dropped to under 100. Wow!  This was all news to me.

For 1,500 years after creation, men lived such long lives that most were either contemporaries of the first man, Adam, or personally knew someone who was! The ten patriarchs (excluding Enoch) who preceded the Great Flood lived an average of 912 years. Lamech died the youngest at the age of 777, and Methuselah lived to be the oldest at 969. See table 1.

Table 1. Ages of the Patriarchs from Adam to Noah

1 Adam 930 Genesis 5:4
2 Seth 912 Genesis 5:8
3 Enosh 905 Genesis 5:11

5 Mahalalel 895 Genesis 5:17
6 Jared 962 Genesis 5:20
7 Enoch 365 (translated) Genesis 5:23
8 Methuselah 969 Genesis 5:27
9 Lamech 777 Genesis 5:31
10 Noah 950 Genesis 9:29

During the 1,000 years following the Flood, however, the Bible records a progressive decline in the life span of the patriarchs, from Noah who lived to be 950 years old until Abraham at 175 (see figure 1 and table 2). In fact, Moses was unusually old for his time (120 years) because, when he reflected on the brevity of life, he said: “The days of our lives are seventy years; and if by reason of strength they are eighty years, yet their boast is only labor and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away” (Psalm 90:10). A lot of scripture was quoted and at the end a Love Offering was requested from the audience. I didn’t know what that meant: were we suppose to hug each other??? Aha, I saw people start to put money in a basket so I caught on.

What Thin People Do by Terry Ryan

slim_fatI consider myself an casual observer of life and people. If I had to do it over again, I would have become a modern day Margaret Mead, the famous social anthropologist. One of my latest personal studies is how thin people eat to keep themselves thin vs. how heavy people eat to keep themselves, well, heavy.

Heavy people will kid themselves with saying-I don’t eat that much. I have a slow metabolism. It’s my genes. Nope, sorry, I have dis-proven the above excuses. What overweight people should be saying is-I eat too many calories. It really comes down to calories in and calories burned. Simple as that.

Yes, your metabolic rate will slow down as we age so we should compensate by eating less.  Of course eating less means you should eat only low calorie and high in nutritional value foods. As you get older, you do not have the option of wasting calories to unhealthy food, or eating healthy all day and throwing an extra 500 calorie dessert in at the end of the day. The experts say, 3500 calories intake equal a pound.

Be braveI knew a man who changed jobs and at his new place of work there was a vending machine (danger!) full of unhealthy snacks. He would go to the snack machine twice a day and buy a sugary cinnamon bun. I figured that each one contained about 400 calories, so that was an extra 800 calories per day. An average man with average physical activity is supposed to consume around 2200 calories a day. He was of normal weight when he started and he put on 40 pounds in a matter of few months. Let’s do the math. 800 Calories X 7 days is  5600 cals extra per week. That means he was gaining an average of 1.5 pound per week. At that rate in 5.5 months he could easily have gained the 40 pounds. It’s that simple. Are you a binge eater?

It could also go the other way. You want to lose 40 pounds by 5.5 months so you reduce your daily caloric intake by 800 calories. Yes, you can also include in the formula-if I consume 400 calories less per day and work off an extra 400 calories, that will also work. But, do you know how hard it is to work off extra calories?  Have you gone to the gym and walked on a tread mill for 30 minutes and when you look at how many calories you just burned, hey, you just walked off a single cookie. You can’t outrun the fork. I think it is better for the masses to put down the fork than to try to become a workout fanatic. Yes, it is great to be a gym regular but who has the time?  I’d rather work around my house or walk around the block than try to fit in a gym schedule. Oh, and I have seen my friends buy lots of home workout equipment and use it for a short period of time before they start hanging clothes on them. Save your money.

How did the guy who gained the 40 pounds by eating cinnamon rolls lose weight? He bought a jetski, the kind that you stand up on and went out on the ocean everyday and hit the waves and overtime he pounded the weight off himself.  And he managed to keep it off, and I thought it was an interesting example how a simple change in a diet can quickly put on weight.

So, I observed and interviewed thin women. They all seem to do the same thing to stay slim: They eat very little. There you have it. The big secret has been revealed. You need about 1200 calories for a woman to survive. That’s all and that is not very much. Here is an example of a 1200 calorie day meal plan.

Realize how everything is measure out. 3 Ounces of celery sticks. 2 Tablespoons of Hummus. Yes, everything in your mouth counts. Grab a handful of nuts….100 calories. Eat a 1/4 cup of ice cream is 350 calories. It all adds up.

slim-age-three-girls-400x400Thin women also plan their meals. They like to pack their lunch so they know what they will be eating. They do not have candy bars hidden in the pantry. They know the calorie count of just about everything they put in their mouths. Thin women know that one Dunkin’ Donut Boston Kreme Donut has 310 calories! They won’t eat it. They also know how to control their hunger. I went to an island picnic with some friends. We the heavier ladies dived into the barbecue of hotdogs and potato salad. We were all starving. But my thin friend said to me and I quote, “I don’t eat that kind of stuff.” Yea, you don’t eat that kind of stuff but wasn’t she as starving as the rest of of?  Thin women would rather stay hungry than eat bad food. They do not succumb to their hunger. That’s somebody who is serious about being thin. I observe and learn.

They also keep sweet things out of the house, special treats are allowed on special occasions, and they stay away from activities that focus on food.

For the most part, they are much healthier than overweight people as far as lab testing goes. They have lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol, and fewer health problems.

If you want to see more 1200 calorie diet plans, go to http://www.eatingwell.com/nutrition_health/weight_loss_diet_plans/diet_meal_plans/7_day_diet_meal_plan_to_lose_weight_1200_calories

And go on the Internet and plan ahead. If you want to eat a Steak N’ Shake chocolate covered strawberry milkshake…just know that it will be 1050 calories. Yikes!
